Cambridge Centre for Gallium Nitride

Fantastic Outreach!

The GaN group has been really busy with outreach recently. We visited year 2 classes at both the Grove primary school and the Stephen Perse Pre-prep where we learnt all about colour and light and made chromatography butterflies.

Children at the Grove told us:

"I was surprised when the brown ink changed to lots of different colours and not brown!"

How does the ink do that?!?

"I liked when the torch was shining different colours of light and how that made lots of different, pretty colours."

"I was interested when we dipped the ink because it got all soggy but, at the end, the colours changed."

Later in the week we had an exciting visit to the lab from 3rd Trumpington Brownies. The Brownies learned all about material science and crystals through building crystal models, examining salt crystals with microscopes and were introduced to our cutting edge electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.
